Wildlife of Phinda Game Reserve

Phinda Private Game Reserve is home to a large variety of animal and plant species. You will find the Big 5 here, a population of Cheetah that have flourished here, as well as the timid spiral-horned Nyala which is a close relative to the Kudu.

One of the reasons Phinda is so unique are the rare sand forests. This forest is home to the Red Duiker, and the Suni deer. These species are seldom seen at other reserves.  A sand forest is inhabited by many rare plant and animal species, and are found near ancient coastal dunes where oceans used to be millions of years ago. The dry clay soils and little rain has forced the flora and fauna to adapt and evolve to survive.  These forests are only found in few other countries in sub-tropical regions.
