History of Phinda Game Reserve

The &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve was established in 1991 when ecotourism quickly became an internationally popular way to travel. The &Beyond family saw a rise in like-minded travellers who wanted to travel, but also help contribute to conservation, economic structure, and new small business enterprises in regions in need. The word Phinda means ‘the return’ in the Zulu language. Thus, symbolizing the goal of the return of the area’s natural state that it is now.

&Beyond is a progression of the model originally established by Londolozi Private Game Reserve. This model proved that economic viability while assisting rural communities and sharing those benefits, was possible through high yield and low impact tourism.
