Conservation at Phinda Game Reserve

There are so many &Beyond success stories pertaining to conservation. Their sustainability journey is deeply rooted in the passion pioneering models of low-impact and high- yield wildlife tourism. Care of the land and for the people, remains the focal point at Phinda Private Game Reserve. As wild life was reintroduced to this area, the conservation pioneering began. To name just a few active projects that have been done:

• The reserve had pioneered the safe reintroduction of both cheetah and lion within the same area.
• Phinda is a founding member of Project Rhino KwaZulu- Natal, which provides security measures to protect the rhino on many other reserves.
• Elephant were relocated from the Kruger Park to Phinda and have thrived to the extent that some have been relocated to other reserves.
• Phinda has become the first private game reserve to donate 6 cheetah for relocation to another country, Botswana.

Community

The underlining key to the Phinda Game Reserve is not only the conservation of land, but the support of the people in nearby communities. There is extensive involvement in the local community. A part of their mission is to be able to sustain hundreds of communities.

&Beyond has partnered up with a community development program. This non-profit program is called The Africa Foundation. Some of the achievements in South Africa include:

• The Mduku Clinic is a 24-hour healthcare facility for people around the Phinda Game Reserve. This clinic serves 25,000 and opened a new wing in 2014.
• The Mbedula Craft Market was established to empower local artisans to sell and showcase their work to support their families.
• Ikuasasalethu Sewing Club involves a group of 15 women who sew school and church uniforms to the KwaJobe community. This amazing group also makes linen for the nearby lodges.
• Phinda Private game reserve runs their own ‘Stars in Training Program’. This project is designed to build the skills of the local people to obtain employment to &Beyond’s lodges as well as many others in the area.
