Activities
There is an abundance of both onsite and offsite activities one can enjoy whilst at Nambiti Hills. Action-packed game drives, fishing, visits to the Battlefields and the Drakensberg Mountains, or a Midlands Meander… These are just a few of the ways to take advantage of the area.
Activities at the lodge
Game Drives
Expert rangers host spectacular sunrise and sunset game drives. Go on an exciting exploration of the most magnificent animals in Africa. The Nambiti Game Reserve boasts an abundance of wildlife and offers plenty of opportunities to see the Big 5. Learn about the biodiversity of the landscape and all the creatures that inhabit the region, all whilst enjoying many photo opportunities along the way.
Bird watching
With over 263 different bird species ranging from large predatory birds to much smaller, more colourful species, the Nambiti Game Reserve is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Birding drives can be arranged and are dependant on lodge capacity.
Activities in the area
Battlefield Tours
Situated in the heart of Battlefields country, where the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars were fought centuries ago, Nambiti Hills offers tours of the area where these decisive battles took place. A historian recreates those turbulent times with such skill that one can almost hear the troops and sense the trepidation.
Township & Freedom Struggle Tours
The township has become a cultural African Mecca of its own; a living testament to the fortitude and resilience of the tribes of Southern Africa. Township tours include being taken by an experienced guide to the various townships’ cultural and historical locations.
Golfing
The Cathedral Peak 9-hole Golf Course has been named “the thinking golfers’ course” and is set against the magnificent backdrop of the Drakensberg. The Champagne Sports Resort Golf Course boasts 18 holes designed by Hugh Baiocchi, set in perfectly manicured grounds and equally spectacular scenery. Golf enthusiasts can also enjoy the Ladysmith Country Club, which offers a 13-hole Golf Course.
Midlands Meander
The foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains offer an 80-km long meandering route that stretches towards Pietermaritzburg. Many years ago, a community of local crafts people came together to create the Midlands Meander, which is now a picturesque trail consisting of more that 160 stops to shop, eat and enjoy the day.
Historical Sites & Scenic Flights
To fly over the majestic Drakensberg mountains is an awesome experience. A World Heritage Site, the Drakensberg is full of scenic drama and extraordinary beauty. From the air, one is privy to the magnitude and variety of this incredible mountain range that cuts through much of KwaZulu-Natal. Flights over the central Drakensberg leave from Ladysmith Airfield, or Champagne Castle in the Drakensberg.
On the ground, guided tours of these historical sites are highly recommended:
- Siege museum
- Town Hall & Town Hall Museum
- The Twins’ (2 x 6.3 Howitzers cannons)
- Statue of Ghandi
- All Saints Church
